Becquerel measurement

Radiocaesium testing examines a sample of game meat. The reading is given in becquerels per kilogram.

Examination & guidance

Becquerel measurement at a glance

If you would like to have game meat tested, you first need to find a suitable contact. The radiocaesium measurement provides a reading for the sample submitted; check the requirements for sampling, quantity and documentation with the testing centre.

This page brings together the steps to take before submission and refers to published regional contact points. It does not promise that the hunting association has its own testing facility.

Sample submission and procedure

Agree the submission directly with the testing station. The test requires 500 g of pure muscle meat. This will ensure you receive the information relevant to your case before preparing a sample.

  • What sample quantity and packaging are required?
  • What information must accompany the sample?
  • When can items be accepted, and what fees apply?
  • Which measurement record, if any, is required for compensation for damage?

Monitoring stations and contacts

Sample and measurement record

  1. Arrange an appointment

Check the sample quantity, packaging, costs and drop-off times in advance.

  2. Record a game animal

Record the agreed details of weight, sex and age classification.

  3. Submit a sample

Take 500 g of pure muscle meat, with the agreed carcass details, to the testing station.

  4. Have it measured

The testing centre measures the radiocaesium level in becquerels per kilogram.

  5. Save minutes

Bring and keep the complete measurement record and proof of costs.

Disposal and compensation

According to the official BayernPortal information, game meat containing more than 600 becquerels of radiocaesium per kilogram may not be sold. Compensation may be claimed for game meat that cannot be used because it is contaminated above this level.

Compile supporting documents

  • Test report from an accredited testing station, including the date and result
  • Original receipt for examination costs
  • Official certificate of destruction, Category 1, with the trade document number and date in the original

Agree in advance with the competent authority or animal by-product disposal service on disposal and the required documentation procedure.

Submit an application

The BayernPortal names the competent lower hunting authority as the office where applications must be submitted. It checks and registers the application, then forwards it to the Federal Office of Administration. Compensation covers game meat and radiation testing; according to the service description, disposal costs are not included.

Contacts at the authorities

The older regional guide names the veterinary office as the place to forward the documents. The current BayernPortal service, however, names the lower hunting authority. Check with the district office about the local submission process before sending original documents.
