Hunting dog training

From puppy classes and training courses with an examination through to the hunting dog suitability test: we train handlers and dogs together for practical hunting.

At the heart of club life

A team grows together.

Our dog training has a clear goal: preparing for and taking the working ability test. We start early with the puppy course, establish reliable foundations in the obedience course and prepare the teams for their hunting duties.

Our training pathway

Three steps. One shared goal.

Puppy course

Building a bond, learning first signals and working together are the starting points for dog training. The dog’s age and stage of development help the training team find a suitable starting point.

Gundog training course

Obedience and safe handling are reinforced and applied to practical tasks. The course concludes with an examination.

Working suitability test

We prepare candidates for the hunting dog aptitude test and conduct the test. The training subjects depend on the intended role and the scope of the examination.

Fieldwork

This is what dog and handler practise.

Obedience and handling

Clear signals and calm handling provide a foundation for all the tasks that follow. Reliable teamwork is essential for work in the hunting area.

Tracking and blood trails

On prepared training trails, the dog and handler learn to work with concentration. Careful preparation is just as important as working with the dog.

Search and retrieve

Search and retrieve tasks complement the training. The subjects practised and assessed depend on the level of working capability sought.

Our 2026 training year

Working together towards passing the exam.

Four teams achieved 1st place and three achieved 2nd place. Jürgen Dietl and Karin Plank prepared the participants. Eva-Maria Witt, Helmut Beisig and Helmut Langer served as judges.

15 August

Six dog teams pass the working ability test.

In the hot weather, dog and handler proved their skills in tasks including tracking a drag trail and blood tracking. Katharina Schmidtpeter, Richard Beisig and Peter Schwarz, acting as reserve judges, accompanied the test.

We would like to thank all participants, the judges and our training team for their efforts.

Before registering

Things to clarify beforehand.

What working tests does my dog need?

The certificate relates to the specific hunting activity. Discuss your area of deployment with the training team. For example, water work is not automatically included in every hunting dog suitability test.

What documents and requirements apply?

The current examination regulations and notice of examination set out eligibility, evidence required, subjects, fees and the closing date for entries. Discuss any examinations you have already taken when you register.

What is the difference between VJP, HZP and VGP?

VJP is the Association's Puppy Test, HZP the Autumn Breeding Test and VGP the Association's Utility Test. They have different aims. The applicable rules govern recognition as proof of suitability for hunting.
