3rd November is dedicated to the patron saint of hunters, St Hubertus.
Humility before creation, pausing for a moment and reflecting on one’s own actions. That is a brief description of what the story of St Hubertus is about.
Unfortunately, hunting has become a kind of competition today. Since everyone with a hunting licence can show on social media what hunting means to them, it is sadly often about going higher, faster, further, doing more …
Pictures of animals that have been shot get more likes than reports about hedge maintenance or sowing game cover crops in the hunting area. Videos of driven hunts with (often) questionable shots get more attention than videos of hunters passing on their knowledge to young people and children.
Fired carelessly and missed? It’s not a problem, it can happen to anyone!
A fox not tracked? It’s only vermin anyway; it’ll die somewhere!
A sow with dependent young shot? Oh, the piglets will manage and be taken along by the sounder.
Of course, anyone can miss a shot, but then they should go and practise. On the shooting range, not at wildlife! But perhaps they can’t be bothered, because someone might see that they’re not quite the crack shot they think they are.
A fox feels pain too and deserves to be put out of its misery quickly after a poor shot.
Orphaned piglets suffer and grow weak. They lack guidance and protection. Often they somehow manage to get by, unless they are still in the nest; then they will certainly starve and/or freeze to death. This must be avoided at all costs.
Discipline, knowing when to keep one’s finger off the trigger, honesty about one’s own abilities and respect for every wild animal: these have always been what is meant by fair chase in hunting, and still are today.
The best hunters are not those who show the most bloody pictures or have the most expensive equipment, but those who handle responsibly the privilege of being allowed to hunt.
With that in mind, we wish you a lovely St Hubertus Day and good hunting 🌿
