Things are a little quieter on the Jägerverein’s calendar at the moment.
So a session in the high seat comes at just the right time. Time to pause, take a breath and reflect...
When did we actually become pest controllers?
One person shouts: “Far too many roe deer”
Another: “Those bloody mouflon have to go”
The next: “Make sure you shoot the wild boar; they’re eating my maize”
No one cares about protecting parent animals, closed seasons, identifying game correctly or safety when taking a shot.
When it’s their own field, meadow or woodland, some people can’t get enough of the gunfire. It doesn’t matter to them that we hunters are bound by regulations. When damage is done to the wheat or maize, they laugh at the fact that a decent hunter has to be able to reconcile everything they do with their conscience.
Fortunately, there are other landowners too. The kind you’re happy to stop and chat with for a few minutes when you meet them. Not just those who immediately start calculating the cost when a maize stalk gets bent.
