Poaching with a pistol crossbow?

An unsettling discovery during a Sunday walk gives one pause for thought. In the middle of the forest, not far from a baiting site, something suddenly lay on the ground. At first it looked like a pen, but turned out to be a small arrow. More arrows were soon spotted, and finally several arrowheads embedded in a tree — so firmly that they could not be pulled out.
Thirty metres further on, a camp came into view. A fire pit, a tree with nails hammered into it all the way around, a makeshift screen — and roe deer hair!!!
It was all rather macabre, especially as game trails ran right past the camp towards the baiting site.
It looked as though someone knew exactly where to lie in wait.
A phone call to the police did not reveal much. They said that perhaps a trail camera should be put up there; that was all they had to say.
.
The trail camera, which was left there for a week, showed only a squirrel hopping past, as expected: if a poacher really had been active here, they would surely not strike again in the same place, but move on. It was unsettling, all the same ...
Have you ever experienced, seen or heard anything similar?
