As well as the usual blood-tracking work, there is another special form of training for our hunting dogs. A dog trained to give the death-bark will bark at a dead animal during a free search until its handler arrives.

A dog trained to indicate a find returns to its handler as soon as it has found dead game and leads them to it.

A dog trained to indicate a find with a retrieval token wears a piece of leather (a retrieval token) on its collar. It picks this up and holds it in its mouth, then returns to its handler to signal that it has found the animal.

There’s that “goosebumps moment” story from a group hunting sit many years ago, when a very elderly hunter failed to arrive at the agreed meeting point after the hunt.
The group decided to look for him, and one of the hunters unclipped his dog’s lead.
A short while later, the dog’s persistent barking echoed through the night, sending shivers down the men’s spines. They found the older hunter near his seat, with the dog sitting beside him, barking to announce his death until its handler arrived. The older hunter had suffered a heart attack. Rest in peace 🌿
