What people consider beautiful and tidy is not necessarily ideal for the smallest creatures – as you can see from gravel gardens and lawns clipped meticulously with nail scissors.
Out in the hunting area, too, a perfectly cultivated field left bare and brown in winter is no place where any living creature would want to spend much time. Neither large nor small animals – perhaps only a sounder of wild boar coming to root around.
Wildlife fields that go into winter looking “untidy” provide shelter for insects, food for birds, and cover and forage for small game.
A perfect world is not always the perfect choice for the other creatures we share it with.
